What Is S5-TOK-TOPOLOGY-MIB?

S5-TOK-TOPOLOGY-MIB is a Bay Networks vendor MIB (part of the S5 'System 5000'/BayStack family) that implements SONMP (SynOptics Network Management Protocol) topology discovery for Token Ring segments on Bay Networks Network Management Modules (NMMs). It models per-interface topology control in s5TrTopIfTable (topology on/off, SONMP message transmit speed), discovered peer NMMs on the same flat network in s5TrTopNmmTable (ring number, ring master flag, ring speed, bridge-group/slot/port location), discovered bridges in s5TrTopBdgTable (bridge type, adjacent ring number, port and status fields), and same-ring NMM neighbors in s5TrTopRingNmmTable (chassis/backplane type, upstream-neighbor address), plus encoded octet-string 'packed row' tables for bulk retrieval of each topology table. This is useful for monitoring live Token Ring network topology — which NMMs, bridges, and rings are currently visible via SONMP announcements — and for detecting when expected neighbors disappear from the topology tables, indicating a broken ring or lost adjacency. It is deployed on Bay Networks token ring NMM hardware operating alongside other SynOptics/Bay Networks SONMP-capable devices. Engineers maintaining legacy Bay Networks Token Ring infrastructure can reference the S5-TOK-TOPOLOGY-MIB MIB when auditing ring topology.

An operator polls s5TrTopNmmTable for entries associated with a given interface's IP address to confirm all expected NMMs on that Token Ring segment are still reporting via SONMP, and checks s5TrTopIfNmmLstChg for recent table changes; an expected NMM's entry disappearing from the table combined with a recent s5TrTopIfNmmLstChg timestamp would indicate that device has dropped off the ring.
