Description: Manages Cisco Remote PHY node downstream and upstream channel configuration for DOCSIS deployments.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RPHY-NDF-NDR-MIB?

RPHY-NDF-NDR-MIB is a Cisco-defined MIB for Remote PHY (R-PHY) devices used in DOCSIS cable access networks, covering Node Discovery/Forwarding (NDF) and ranging functions on the Remote PHY Device (RPD). It exposes per-channel configuration data for downstream and upstream RF ports, including frequency, bandwidth, power adjustment, and the source/destination IP addressing used for NDF sessions between the RPD and the cable core. Its monitoring value lies in confirming that individual RF ports/channels are correctly enabled, correctly addressed, and running with the expected session ID and RF parameters -- essentially software/configuration status of the R-PHY node -- rather than reporting classic hardware counters like CPU load or temperature. It belongs to the broader DOCSIS Remote PHY MIB family (the docsRphy* namespace) tied to CableLabs' Remote PHY / Distributed Access Architecture specifications. It is typically deployed by cable operators (MSOs) managing fiber nodes where PHY functions have been relocated from the headend into the access network. Engineers can download the RPHY-NDF-NDR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RPHY-NDF-NDR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Remote PHY Device (RPD)
  • DOCSIS Remote PHY node/fiber node

Monitoring Examples

An operator could poll docsRphyRpdDevNdfCfgTable / docsRphyRpdDevNdfCfgEntry rows to check docsRphyRpdDevNdfEnable alongside docsRphyRpdDevNdfRfPort and docsRphyRpdDevNdfRfChannel to confirm a specific channel's NDF session is active. Cross-checking docsRphyRpdDevNdfDstIPAddr and docsRphyRpdDevNdfSrcIPAddr against expected core/RPD addressing would reveal a misconfigured or dropped NDF session, while docsRphyRpdDevNdfFrequency and docsRphyRpdDevNdfBandwidth confirm the RF parameters match plan. An unexpected docsRphyRpdDevNdfPowerAdjust value would flag an RF power tuning issue on that channel.

What Can Be Monitored

  • NDF session enable state
  • RF port and channel assignment
  • channel frequency and bandwidth
  • source/destination IP addressing for NDF sessions
  • RF power adjustment
  • session ID

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using docsRphyRpdDevNdfRpdInPktCount OID:

Select a Cisco Remote PHY Device (RPD), DOCSIS Remote PHY node/fiber node (channel/session configuration) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type docsRphyRpdDevNdfRpdInPktCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This attribute reports the number of packets received by the RPD on a given NDF stream. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
