Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Hardware and Environment

Description: Monitors Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) status and battery health for CableLabs-defined DOCSIS equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CLAB-UPS-MIB?

CLAB-UPS-MIB is a CableLabs MIB dedicated to configuring and monitoring the battery backup / UPS functionality built into DOCSIS-compliant devices, such as cable modems or eMTAs that must keep providing voice service during a power outage. Per its stated module description, it exposes objects grouped under configuration/status (clabUpsObjects) and fault notifications (clabUpsNotifications) for the battery-backup subsystem. This is explicitly a hardware-health MIB in intent: its purpose is to let an operator monitor whether the device's battery backup is present, charged, and capable of sustaining service, and to be notified when the device switches to battery power or the battery degrades. As a CableLabs specification it is part of the broader DOCSIS device-management MIB family and would typically be used alongside other CableLabs device MIBs. It is deployed by cable operators who need visibility into UPS/battery health across a large population of powered customer-premises equipment, particularly for lifeline voice service. Engineers can download the CLAB-UPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CLAB-UPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CableLabs DOCSIS cable modems/eMTAs with battery backup
  • residential gateway devices with a UPS/battery backup unit

Monitoring Examples

The sample objects available here are only the top-level branch nodes (clabUpsObjects, clabUpsNotifications, clabUpsConformance) rather than concrete leaf data objects, so specific battery-voltage or charge-percentage object names cannot be honestly cited from this excerpt. Based on the module's stated purpose, an operator would poll objects under clabUpsObjects to confirm a gateway's battery backup is present and adequately charged. clabUpsNotifications would be the mechanism by which the operator learns, in near real time, that a device has switched to battery power during a utility outage or that its battery has failed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UPS/battery backup presence and operational status
  • battery charge/health status
  • AC power presence or failure indication
  • UPS-related fault notifications
