What Is RFC1215?
RFC1215 is a foundational, vendor-neutral IETF standards document (not a data-bearing MIB in the modern sense) that defines the TRAP-TYPE macro, the original SMIv1 convention for specifying how SNMP traps are structured and numbered. It contains no monitored objects of its own; instead it establishes the syntax — often described in terms of the RFC1215 OID conventions for trap identifiers — that virtually all early (SMIv1-era) enterprise and standard MIBs use to define their trap/notification definitions. Its relevance to hardware/software status monitoring is entirely indirect—every legacy trap for conditions like link down, power supply failure, or coldStart/warmStart relies on the TRAP-TYPE macro this RFC defines, making it a silent dependency underneath most fault notifications from that era. Virtually every SMIv1 vendor MIB with traps (and RFC1213/MIB-II's own traps) depends on this convention. It remains relevant wherever legacy SMIv1 MIBs and their trap definitions are still parsed or generated today.
