All MIBs › RFC-1155

Category: IETF Standards

Description: Defines the SMIv1 structure-of-management-information framework for SNMP object definitions.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RFC-1155?

RFC-1155 defines the SMIv1 (Structure of Management Information version 1) framework, the foundational ASN.1-based data-typing and naming conventions used to define all early SNMP MIB objects, rather than a device-specific or feature-specific MIB itself. It is a vendor-neutral IETF standards document that establishes base types (Counter, Gauge, TimeTicks, IpAddress) and the OID tree conventions that every other MIB in this collection ultimately depends on. It exposes no runtime monitorable data of its own; it is purely a schema/definitional module, not something that reports uptime, temperature, CPU load, or any operational status. Virtually every SMIv1-based MIB module has an implicit dependency on RFC-1155 for its base type definitions. It is used only in the sense that every SNMPv1-era MIB compiler and management application must load or understand it to parse any other MIB correctly. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the RFC-1155 RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC-1155. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based framework, not tied to a specific manufacturer or device class

Monitoring Examples

RFC-1155 has no sample_objects because it is a structure-of-management-information framework document, not a MIB with pollable data objects; it defines base types like Counter and Gauge that other MIBs use, but does not itself expose device data. No monitoring scenario applies since there is nothing to poll on a device from this module, as its role is purely as a type-definition dependency for every other SMIv1 MIB.
