What Is RFC1233-MIB?

RFC1233-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB, a corrected republication of RFC 1233 (with OID reassignments from RFC 1239), that defines DS3/T3 physical-layer management objects for line configuration, historical performance, and current-interval statistics. Its ds3ConfigTable, indexed by ds3CSUIndex, exposes per-interface configuration and alarm state such as ds3LineType (M23/SYNTRAN/C-bit-parity/clear-channel), ds3Loopback state, ds3YellowAlarm and ds3RedAlarm indicators, and ds3CircuitIdentifier for the carrier's circuit ID. A companion ds3IntervalTable, indexed by ds3IntervalIndex and ds3IntervalNumber (1..96), stores 24 hours of rolling 15-minute performance history -- errored seconds, severely errored seconds, severely errored framing seconds, unavailable seconds, controlled slip seconds, bipolar violations, and coding violations (ds3IntervalESs/SESs/SEFSs/UASs/CSSs/BPVs/CVs) -- while a ds3CurrentTable applies the same counters to the in-progress interval. Together these tables let a management station both confirm a DS3 circuit's provisioned line type/framing and trend its error-second history over the prior day. It has minimal dependencies, importing only Counter from RFC1155-SMI, DisplayString/transmission from RFC1213-MIB, and OBJECT-TYPE from RFC-1212, reflecting its origin as one of the earliest IETF interface MIBs. It is deployed on any router, CSU/DSU, or WAN interface card terminating a DS3/T3 circuit, and this MIB corresponds directly to the RFC1233-MIB RFC text, updated per RFC 1239's OID reassignments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1233-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 1233 / RFC 1239), not tied to a specific manufacturer -- applies to routers, CSU/DSUs, and WAN interface cards terminating DS3/T3 circuits

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ds3IntervalESs and ds3IntervalUASs across the 96 most recent 15-minute intervals for a ds3CSUIndex to trend the circuit's error history over the past day, and checks ds3RedAlarm/ds3YellowAlarm for the current state; a red alarm combined with a spike in ds3IntervalUASs for the corresponding interval would confirm the circuit went physically down during that window rather than merely degraded.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DS3 line type and framing configuration
  • loopback state
  • yellow/red alarm indicators
  • 24-hour rolling 15-minute interval error/performance counters
  • current-interval error/performance counters
