Category: System Management, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Monitors memory utilization and allocation statistics per card on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-MEMORY-MIB?

RBN-MEMORY-MIB is a Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge enterprise MIB dedicated to monitoring system memory usage across the cards/modules in a chassis-based BRAS. It exposes per-module memory statistics through two related tables, one at the SMS (system management/software) level and one at a general module level, each tracking free bytes, bytes in use, memory blocks in use, and cumulative block allocations. This is squarely a hardware/software health MIB: it lets an operator watch for memory exhaustion or fragmentation on individual line cards or control modules, a common precursor to card instability, process crashes, or degraded packet forwarding performance on a heavily loaded BRAS. It is a standalone Redback enterprise MIB, though it is typically correlated with module/slot identifiers defined elsewhere in the Redback enterprise MIB tree (e.g. chassis/card MIBs) to map memory readings to physical hardware. It is deployed on Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge routers where per-card memory pressure needs continuous tracking to catch leaks or exhaustion before they cause service outages. Engineers can download the RBN-MEMORY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-MEMORY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS chassis
  • SmartEdge line/control cards

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls rbnSmsMemoryTable/rbnSmsMemoryEntry, indexed by rbnSmsMemoryIndex and rbnSmsMemoryModule, tracking rbnSmsMemoryFreeBytes and rbnSmsMemoryBytesInUse over time to detect a steady decline in free memory suggesting a leak on a particular module; a parallel check of rbnMemoryTable/rbnMemoryEntry via rbnMemoryModule gives a general per-module view for comparison. A sudden drop in rbnSmsMemoryFreeBytes combined with rising rbnSmsMemoryBlocksInUse on one card, while others remain stable, points to a memory leak isolated to that specific module needing a reload or software fix.

What Can Be Monitored

  • free memory per module
  • memory bytes in use per module
  • memory blocks in use
  • cumulative memory block allocation
