Description: Extends alarm management with SmartEdge-specific severity levels, correlation, and history.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-ALARM-EXT-MIB?
RBN-ALARM-EXT-MIB is a private Redback Networks (later Ericsson SmartEdge) MIB that extends the standard IETF ALARM-MIB (RFC 3877) with additional alarm-model and alarm-clearing semantics for SmartEdge routers. Its data covers the alarm model table and an alarm-clear resource table that stores the specific typed value (Counter32, Unsigned32, TimeTicks, Integer32, or OctetString) needed to clear a given active alarm. This is a fault-management MIB in the truest sense: rbnAlarmModelTable exposes the alarm models currently defined on the router, and rbnAlarmClearResourceTable/Entry lets an operator see the exact resource condition that must be met to clear an active hardware or software fault, directly supporting root-cause and resolution tracking for device alarms. It explicitly extends the alarmModelTable and alarmClearTable defined in the IETF ALARM-MIB (RFC 3877), making that standard MIB its core dependency. It is deployed on Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge multi-service routers in service-provider networks, feeding alarms into an NMS/EMS fault-management system through RBN-ALARM-EXT-MIB SNMP monitoring.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-ALARM-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Redback Networks / Ericsson SmartEdge multi-service routers
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls rbnAlarmModelTable/rbnAlarmModelEntry (indexed by rbnAlarmModelResourceIdx) to see the alarm models defined on the router, then checks rbnAlarmClearResourceTable/rbnAlarmClearResourceEntry (rbnAlarmClearResourceID, rbnAlarmClearResourceValueType, and the matching typed value such as rbnAlarmClearResourceCounter32Val or rbnAlarmClearResourceTimeTicksVal) to determine the exact threshold or condition that will clear an active alarm, useful when correlating a currently active hardware or link fault with the resource state needed for it to resolve.
What Can Be Monitored
- active alarm model entries
- alarm clearing resource ID and type
- alarm clear threshold values (counter, timer, integer, string)

RFC description
Extended alarm management extensions to RFC 3877 ALARM-MIB, augmenting active and cleared alarm table tracking for Ericsson devices.
Start monitoring Redback Networks / Ericsson SmartEdge router (extended alarm-model/alarm-clear reporting) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
