What Is ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-PING-CAP?
ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-PING-CAP is an Ericsson AGENT-CAPABILITIES MIB (eriRouterIetfPingCap, under the eriRouterCapabilities branch) that documents exactly which parts of the IETF DISMAN-PING-MIB (RFC 4560) are implemented on Ericsson's SEOS-based router families -- SmartEdge (SE), Metro Ethernet Service Transport (SM), and Smart Service Router (SSR). It defines two capability statements, eriRouterIetfPingCap1 (SEOS 6.1.4.2) and eriRouterIetfPingCap2 (SEOS 6.3.x/11.1.x), each declaring supported conformance groups (pingMinimumGroup, pingCtlRowStatusGroup, pingNotificationsGroup, and pingHistoryGroup on the newer release) and a long list of VARIATION clauses restricting object access, write-syntax ranges, and supported values -- for example, limiting pingCtlTargetAddressType to IPv4/DNS only, capping pingCtlDataSize at 18024 octets, and marking pingProbeHistoryTable and pingProbeFailed unsupported on the older release. Rather than exposing live monitoring data itself, this MIB tells a management application what a specific SEOS release will and won't let it configure or read when it uses the standard DISMAN-PING-MIB to run SNMP-triggered ping tests. It depends entirely on the DISMAN-PING-MIB object definitions it describes and on the ERICSSON-ROUTER-SMI enterprise tree for its OID placement, and is deployed as a reference document alongside the router's actual PING-MIB agent implementation. Network teams validating SNMP-based ping automation against Ericsson routers can download the ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-PING-CAP file to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ERICSSON-ROUTER-IETF-PING-CAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson SmartEdge (SE), Metro Ethernet Service Transport (SM), and Smart Service Router (SSR) families running SEOS
- Ericsson SmartEdge router series
Monitoring Examples
Before scripting SNMP-triggered ping tests against a SmartEdge router, an operator checks eriRouterIetfPingCap1's VARIATION for pingCtlDataSize and pingCtlTargetAddressType to confirm the packet-size range and address-type restrictions their automation must respect; attempting to set an IPv6 target address type against a router matching this capabilities profile would be rejected because IPv6 isn't in the supported WRITE-SYNTAX.
What Can Be Monitored
- supported DISMAN-PING-MIB conformance groups per SEOS release
- ping control object access/write restrictions
- supported target/source address types
- maximum ping data size and frequency limits
- ping history table support (release-dependent)
