Description: Manages physical layer interface parameters including speed, duplex, and auto-negotiation settings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RADLAN-PHY-MIB?

RADLAN-PHY-MIB is a Radlan (a switch-software/chipset technology licensed to many OEM Ethernet switch vendors) private MIB for testing Layer 1 physical interface characteristics on supported switch products. Rather than continuously exposing live PHY statistics, it defines a test-set/test-get object pattern: an operator writes a test type into rlPhyTestSetTable to initiate a physical-layer diagnostic on an interface, then reads back the outcome via rlPhyTestGetTable, including status, result, units, alarm flag, and a timestamp. This makes it a hardware-diagnostic MIB rather than a passive monitoring one -- it is used to actively test physical layer health (comparable to a cable/TDR test) and confirm whether an interface's PHY is functioning correctly, surfacing a pass/fail-style alarm and result rather than continuous counters. It operates alongside, but does not replace, the standard IF-MIB and Ethernet-like MIBs that provide ongoing interface statistics. It is deployed on switches built on Radlan's embedded switch software, common among a range of white-label and OEM Ethernet switch products. Engineers can download the RADLAN-PHY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADLAN-PHY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ethernet switches built on Radlan embedded switch software (various OEMs)

Monitoring Examples

A field technician suspecting a bad cable on a port would write an entry to rlPhyTestSetTable via rlPhyTestSetType to trigger a physical-layer test on that interface. They would then poll rlPhyTestGetTable, checking rlPhyTestGetStatus for completion and rlPhyTestGetResult, rlPhyTestGetUnits, and rlPhyTestGetAlarm to see the measured value and whether it flagged a fault. The rlPhyTestGetTimeStamp confirms when the test was run, letting them correlate the diagnostic against a specific incident report.

What Can Be Monitored

  • on-demand PHY test status
  • PHY test result value
  • PHY test alarm flag
  • PHY test timestamp
