What Is RADIUS-DYNAUTH-SERVER-MIB?

RADIUS-DYNAUTH-SERVER-MIB is an IETF standards-based MIB (RFC 4673) for monitoring the server side of RADIUS Dynamic Authorization Extensions, tracking how a RADIUS/AAA policy server issues Disconnect-Request and Change-of-Authorization (CoA) messages to network access clients. It belongs to the network access/AAA protocol area and exposes per-client and aggregate statistics on Disconnect and CoA request processing, acknowledgments, and duplicate/error conditions. Its monitoring relevance is protocol/software health: counters for invalid client addresses, duplicate Disconnect requests, and Disconnect acknowledgments reveal whether dynamic session-control commands issued by the AAA server are being correctly delivered to and acted upon by network access clients such as switches or wireless controllers. It is explicitly an extension to the base RADIUS dynamic-authorization framework standardized alongside RFC 3576/5176. It is typically deployed on centralized RADIUS/AAA policy servers that issue forced disconnects or authorization changes to network access devices, consistent with the RADIUS-DYNAUTH-SERVER-MIB RFC (RFC 4673) it implements.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll radiusDynAuthServerDisconInvalidClientAddresses and radiusDynAuthServerCoAInvalidClientAddresses to detect Disconnect/CoA responses referencing unrecognized client devices, radiusDynAuthClientTable/radiusDynAuthClientEntry (keyed by radiusDynAuthClientIndex with radiusDynAuthClientAddressType/radiusDynAuthClientAddress) to confirm which NAS clients are registered, and radiusDynAuthServerIdentifier to identify the issuing server instance. Rising radiusDynAuthServDupDisconRequests alongside a low radiusDynAuthServDisconAcks count relative to radiusDynAuthServDisconRequests would indicate a client device is not acknowledging disconnect commands, meaning forced session terminations are silently failing.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using radiusDynAuthServerDisconInvalidClientAddresses OID:

Select an RADIUS/AAA policy server (dynamic authorization server, RFC 4673) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type radiusDynAuthServerDisconInvalidClientAddresses into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of Disconnect-Request packets received from unknown addresses. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
