Organization: IETF RADIUS Working Group.

Last Updated: 2000-01-02

Category: RADIUS and AAA

Description: Tracks RADIUS authentication and accounting statistics including packet counts and response times.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RADIUS-STAT-MIB?

RADIUS-STAT-MIB is an IETF RADIUS Working Group specification (authored by Sergey Poznyakoff, marked Experimental rather than a full Standards-Track RFC) that models the statistics side of a RADIUS authentication/dial server, complementing the IANA-assigned radiusMIB branch under mib-2 67. It exposes server-level identification and uptime (radiusStatIdent, radiusStatUpTime), aggregate dial-line counts (radiusStatTotalLines, radiusStatTotalLinesInUse, radiusStatTotalLinesIdle), a per-NAS table of line usage (radiusStatNASTable), and a detailed per-port table (radiusStatNASPortTable) tracking login counts, idle/in-use time totals and maxima, and last-login/logout timestamps. Because it is purely a statistics module, it depends on a companion RADIUS server implementation to populate the underlying dial-line/port data and is typically deployed alongside NAS (Network Access Server) equipment rather than on the RADIUS server itself. Administrators can consult the RADIUS-STAT-MIB RFC draft when instrumenting SNMP-based visibility into RADIUS-authenticated dial-up capacity.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADIUS-STAT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, IETF RADIUS Working Group MIB (Experimental, mib-2 67), not tied to a specific manufacturer -- applies to RADIUS servers and Network Access Servers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls radiusStatTotalLinesInUse against radiusStatTotalLines to gauge dial capacity utilization, then drills into radiusStatNASPortTable's radiusStatPortStatus and radiusStatPortIdleMaxTime for a specific port; a port stuck in inUse status with an abnormally long radiusStatPortInUseTotalTime would flag a hung or leaked session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • total/in-use/idle dial-line counts
  • per-NAS line utilization table
  • per-port login and status history
  • port idle and in-use time statistics
  • server implementation identity and uptime

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using radiusStatTotalLines OID:

Select a device implementing RADIUS-STAT-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type radiusStatTotalLines into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of dialup lines registered by the statistics module. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
