Last Updated: 2006-05-10

Category: RADIUS and AAA

Description: Monitors RADIUS accounting server operations including request and response counters per client.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RADIUS-ACCT-SERVER-MIB?

RADIUS-ACCT-SERVER-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB (RFC 2620) covering devices or software instances acting as RADIUS accounting servers, which receive and process session accounting records from network access clients. It exposes counters for accounting requests received, responses sent, duplicate and malformed packets, and per-client statistics rather than physical device sensors. For software status monitoring, it lets an operator confirm the accounting server process is actively accepting and answering requests, and identify clients experiencing communication trouble via error and duplicate counters. It is the server-side counterpart to RADIUS-ACCT-CLIENT-MIB and depends on the same underlying RADIUS protocol definitions. It is typically deployed on AAA servers or RADIUS-capable network appliances that centralize accounting for authentication infrastructure. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the RADIUS-ACCT-SERVER-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADIUS-ACCT-SERVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • RADIUS accounting servers, AAA appliances

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the per-client accounting table for requests received, duplicate requests, and responses sent, indexed by the requesting client's IP address, to confirm accounting records are being processed without loss. A high count of malformed or unknown-type packets from a particular client could indicate misconfiguration or a firmware issue on that access device. Comparing requests received versus responses sent over time helps detect server-side processing bottlenecks.

What Can Be Monitored

  • accounting requests received
  • responses sent
  • duplicate requests
  • malformed packets
  • per-client request/response counters
  • unknown packet types
