Category: RADIUS and AAA

Description: Monitors RADIUS accounting server operations, tracking Accounting-Request and Accounting-Response statistics.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB?

RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB, standardized in RFC 4671, defines management objects for the server side of the RADIUS accounting protocol, used to track Accounting-Request and Accounting-Response message activity on a RADIUS accounting server. It exposes identity and uptime information for the server along with detailed request/response counters covering total, invalid, duplicate, malformed, and dropped accounting messages. This MIB is used to monitor the software/service status of the RADIUS accounting server, with radiusAccServUpTime and radiusAccServResetTime indicating service availability and radiusAccServTotalInvalidRequests, radiusAccServTotalBadAuthenticators, and radiusAccServTotalPacketsDropped revealing malformed or malicious accounting traffic and potential shared-secret misconfiguration between NAS clients and the server. It is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB and has no dependency beyond standard SNMP framework MIBs, serving as the accounting-side counterpart to the RADIUS Authentication Server MIB. It is typically deployed on any AAA server infrastructure that processes RADIUS accounting for network access, VPN, or Wi-Fi authentication, per the RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB RFC (RFC 4671) it implements.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applicable to any RADIUS accounting server (AAA server)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll radiusAccServTotalRequests and radiusAccServTotalResponses to confirm the accounting server is actively processing traffic, then check radiusAccServTotalBadAuthenticators and radiusAccServTotalMalformedRequests to detect a NAS client sending accounting packets with a mismatched shared secret. A rising radiusAccServTotalPacketsDropped or radiusAccServTotalNoRecords count alongside a recent radiusAccServResetTime would indicate the accounting service was recently restarted and is currently failing to log some accounting records.

What Can Be Monitored

  • server uptime and reset time
  • total accounting requests/responses
  • invalid/duplicate/malformed request counts
  • bad authenticator (shared secret mismatch) count
  • dropped packets and missing records count

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using radiusAccServTotalRequests OID:

Select a device implementing RADIUS-ACC-SERVER-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type radiusAccServTotalRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of packets received on the accounting port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
