Category: QoS and Traffic Management

Description: Manages BATM Advanced Communication storm control thresholds for broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast traffic suppression.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PRVT-STORM-CTL-MIB?

PRVT-STORM-CTL-MIB is a BATM Advanced Communications (Telco Systems) vendor-specific MIB for T-Metro switches that manages storm control — the suppression of excessive broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast traffic on a switch port. It defines prvtStrmCtlPortTable, indexed by ifIndex, with prvtStrmCtlPortShutdown controlling whether storm control is active on a port, and prvtStrmCtlPortTrafficTable, indexed by ifIndex plus prvtStrmCtlPortTrafficType (all, unknown, multicast, or broadcast), exposing a configurable prvtStrmCtlPortTrafficThreshold in packets-per-second for each traffic type. A threshold set far above or below expected traffic levels can either let a broadcast storm degrade the switch fabric or falsely trigger storm-control action on legitimate bursty traffic, so confirming the configured thresholds match the intended traffic profile is part of routine port-health verification. It depends on the underlying IF-MIB ifIndex numbering and the switch's hardware storm-control enforcement engine, and this PRVT-STORM-CTL-MIB MIB is deployed on BATM/Telco Systems T-Metro carrier Ethernet switches.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PRVT-STORM-CTL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • BATM Advanced Communications / Telco Systems T-Metro carrier Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator checks prvtStrmCtlPortTrafficThreshold for the broadcast traffic type on an access port carrying a known amount of legitimate broadcast traffic; a threshold configured lower than that legitimate traffic rate would cause storm control to needlessly suppress normal broadcasts on that port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port storm control enable/shutdown state
  • per-traffic-type (broadcast/multicast/unknown-unicast) threshold configuration
  • traffic-type row status/activation
