Category: Cable/DOCSIS, Voice/IVR

Description: Manages CableLabs IPCablecom Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) provisioning, line configuration, and operational status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PKTC-MTA-MIB?

PKTC-MTA-MIB is the CableLabs PacketCable/IPCablecom standards MIB for managing the Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA), the embedded voice-over-cable module in a cable modem/eMTA device that provides telephone service. It exposes device identity (serial number, hardware version, MAC address, FQDN), provisioning configuration and security certificates, and operational status objects covering the device's provisioning state and endpoint (telephone line) count. For hardware/software status monitoring, it directly reports pktcMtaDevProvisioningState (whether the MTA has completed provisioning), pktcMtaDevHardwareVersion, and supports a remote pktcMtaDevResetNow action, letting an operator confirm a voice device came up correctly after provisioning or trigger a remote reboot when troubleshooting. This is a vendor-neutral IETF/CableLabs standards MIB and works alongside the DOCSIS cable modem MIBs (e.g., DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB) since the MTA typically shares a chassis with the cable modem's data-plane. Typical deployment context is a residential or business embedded MTA (eMTA)/cable modem combo device delivering VoIP telephone service over a DOCSIS cable network, and this PKTC-MTA-MIB reference is what cable operators consult to interpret those provisioning and status objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PKTC-MTA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, CableLabs standards MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • embedded MTA (eMTA)/DOCSIS cable modem combo devices

Monitoring Examples

A cable operator's provisioning system would poll pktcMtaDevProvisioningState per device to confirm whether an MTA has completed the CableLabs provisioning flow (stuck in an early state indicates a provisioning/config-file failure), while pktcMtaDevEndPntCount confirms how many phone lines the device is presenting. pktcMtaDevMacAddress and pktcMtaDevSerialNumber identify the specific unit for a truck-roll or remote diagnostic, and pktcMtaDevHttpAccess indicates whether the local management web UI is enabled. If a subscriber reports no dial tone, an operator can also invoke pktcMtaDevResetNow to remotely reboot the MTA as a troubleshooting step.

What Can Be Monitored

  • provisioning state
  • hardware version
  • serial number and MAC address
  • endpoint (phone line) count
  • device enabled state
  • HTTP management access setting
