What Is BRCM-BFC-MGMT-MIB?

BRCM-BFC-MGMT-MIB is a Broadcom enterprise MIB for the BFC (Broadband Foundation Classes) software stack running on cable modems, within the DOCSIS/cable-modem management area. It exposes software status data — build date/time, builder identity, operating system, SNMP agent version — alongside an application inventory table listing each software component running on the device with its version, release state, and enabled features, plus a boot-count object. This is a software-status-focused MIB: bfcSwDateTime/bfcSwBuiltBy/bfcSwOperatingSystem/bfcSwSnmpAgent let an admin confirm exactly which firmware build is running, bfcApplicationTable tracks the versions and states of individual software components, and bfcSwNumBoots is a direct stability indicator — an unexpectedly high or rapidly increasing reboot count signals a crashing or unstable modem. It is a Broadcom-chipset-specific enterprise extension layered on top of standard DOCSIS cable device MIBs (e.g., DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB) rather than a replacement for them. Typical deployment is cable modems and cable data gateways using Broadcom silicon, monitored by cable operators' provisioning/NMS systems for firmware compliance and stability tracking, and operators can download the BRCM-BFC-MGMT-MIB file directly for use in their MIB compiler.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BRCM-BFC-MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Broadcom-chipset cable modems
  • cable data gateways

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll bfcSwDateTime, bfcSwBuiltBy, and bfcSwOperatingSystem to confirm the exact firmware build running on a fleet of cable modems, useful when validating a firmware rollout. bfcApplicationTable/bfcApplicationEntry, keyed by bfcAppIndex, exposes bfcAppName, bfcAppVersion, and bfcAppReleaseState for each software component running on the device, letting an admin spot a component still on an old release after an upgrade. A steadily climbing bfcSwNumBoots value across polling cycles is a strong signal of an unstable modem repeatedly crashing and rebooting, warranting a truck roll or remote diagnostic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • firmware build date/time and builder
  • operating system identification
  • per-application software version and release state
  • SNMP agent version
  • device boot count
