Description: Manages PIM Sparse-Mode multicast routing on D-Link devices, covering RP discovery, join/prune state, and interface configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PIM-SM-MIB?

PIM-SM-MIB is a D-Link proprietary enterprise MIB for managing Protocol Independent Multicast Sparse-Mode (PIM-SM) routing, covering rendezvous point (RP) discovery, join/prune state, and interface-level multicast routing configuration on D-Link switches/routers. Based on its module description and referenced object, it exposes a global state object controlling or reflecting whether PIM-SM is enabled on the device, and in a complete implementation would include per-interface and per-group PIM state tables. It is used to monitor the software configuration status of the multicast routing protocol, primarily whether PIM-SM is globally enabled, which helps confirm multicast routing is active before troubleshooting downstream group-join or RP-reachability issues. It parallels the structure of the IETF PIM-MIB (RFC 5060) conceptually, though implemented as a D-Link enterprise-specific module. It is deployed on D-Link switches or routers providing multicast routing in enterprise or campus networks. Engineers can download the PIM-SM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PIM-SM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link switch/router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check swPimSmGlobalState to confirm PIM Sparse-Mode routing is enabled on a D-Link device before investigating why a multicast stream is not reaching downstream receivers. If swPimSmGlobalState shows PIM-SM disabled unexpectedly, that alone would explain a loss of multicast forwarding across the device. Because only this single global state object is listed in sample_objects, more granular join/prune or RP-mapping table monitoring cannot be confirmed as present in this specific module revision.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PIM Sparse-Mode global enable state
