Category: Routing Protocols

Description: Defines managed objects for the PIM Bootstrap Router mechanism, managing Candidate-RP advertisements, BSR elections, and RP-set distribution.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring PIM-BSR-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is PIM-BSR-MIB?

PIM-BSR-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 5240) that manages the PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) Bootstrap Router mechanism used to distribute Rendezvous Point (RP) information in multicast networks. It exposes configuration and operational data about Candidate-RP advertisements, BSR election state, and RP-set distribution rather than physical hardware health. Its monitoring value is chiefly for software/protocol status: administrators can check candidate RP advertisement timers, priorities, hold times, and row status to confirm the multicast control plane is healthy and RPs are being correctly advertised. As an IETF RFC-based module it is designed to sit alongside other PIM and multicast MIBs (e.g., PIM-MIB, IGMP-MIB) as part of a coordinated multicast management framework. It is typically deployed on multicast-capable routers in enterprise or service-provider networks running PIM-SM with the BSR RP-discovery mechanism. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the PIM-BSR-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PIM-BSR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • multicast-capable IP router running PIM-SM

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll pimBsrCandidateRPTable/pimBsrCandidateRPEntry rows, examining pimBsrCandidateRPAddress, pimBsrCandidateRPGroupAddress, pimBsrCandidateRPPriority, and pimBsrCandidateRPHoldtime to verify a router's advertised RP mappings are current and correctly prioritized. Watching pimBsrCandidateRPAdvTimer against pimBsrCandidateRPAdvInterval can reveal a stalled or misconfigured candidate RP that has stopped re-advertising, which would eventually cause its RP mapping to expire and disrupt multicast forwarding. The pimBsrCandidateRPStatus column (RowStatus) shows whether a given candidate-RP entry is active, useful for confirming intended configuration is actually in effect.

What Can Be Monitored

  • candidate RP address and group mappings
  • candidate RP advertisement interval and timer
  • candidate RP priority
  • candidate RP hold time
  • bidirectional PIM RP flag
  • candidate RP row/entry status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using pimBsrCandidateRPAdvTimer OID:

Select a device implementing PIM-BSR-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type pimBsrCandidateRPAdvTimer into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The time remaining before the local router next sends a Candidate-RP-Advertisement to the elected BSR for this zone. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a TimeTicks-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value stays unexpectedly high or low relative to what you'd expect for this timer, since that can indicate a stuck or stale state. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
