Organization: Schmid Telecom, Zurich

Last Updated: 2005-02-02

Category: Optical Networking

Description: Defines lean SNMP trap notifications for the Schmid Telecom Pegasus SDH/PDH microwave radio system.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PEGASUS-LEAN-TRAP-MIB?

PEGASUS-LEAN-TRAP-MIB is a vendor-specific companion notification module from Schmid Telecom (Zurich), not an RFC standard, that the module identity pegasusLeanTrapModule describes as splitting out the notification types of the base PEGASUS-MIB (imported via pegasusMibModule) for their Pegasus SDSL access system. It defines a single generic pegasusAlarm NOTIFICATION-TYPE carrying sender, senderObjectName, and senderDescription (identifying the affected DSL line card, DSL link, IAD, or V5 interface), together with a large probableCause enumeration (lossOfSignal, dslLoswFailure, alarmIndicationSignal, dataswitchPsu1Fail, deviceFailure, and dozens more) and a perceivedSeverity of critical, major, minor, warning, cleared, or indeterminate. Because the same trap type reports both the raising and clearing of a condition, it is deployed alongside PEGASUS-MIB to give a compact alarm feed for Pegasus SDSL line cards, data switches, and V5 interfaces without requiring a full MIB walk. Administrators can download the PEGASUS-LEAN-TRAP-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PEGASUS-LEAN-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Schmid Telecom Pegasus SDSL access system (line cards, IADs, V5 interfaces)

Monitoring Examples

An operator subscribes to pegasusAlarm traps and inspects the probableCause and perceivedSeverity varbinds for each sender; a trap with sender dslInterfaceAvailabilityStatus, probableCause dslLoswFailure, and perceivedSeverity minor (rather than cleared) indicates an ongoing loss-of-synchronization-word condition on that DSL line card interface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • pegasusAlarm notifications (combined raise/clear alarm events)
  • probableCause enumeration (e.g. lossOfSignal, dslLoswFailure, alarmIndicationSignal, deviceFailure, dataswitchPsu1Fail)
  • perceivedSeverity (critical, major, minor, warning, cleared, indeterminate)
  • sender / senderObjectName / senderDescription (identification of the affected DSL interface, link, card, or V5 interface)
