What Is ONEFS-SNAPSHOT-MIB?

ONEFS-SNAPSHOT-MIB (despite its name, actually a general OneFS statistics MIB) is a vendor MIB for Dell EMC/Isilon OneFS scale-out NAS clusters, exposing cluster-wide and per-node storage statistics. It reports node identity and versioning information along with filesystem capacity metrics (free, total, and available blocks and block size) and network/filesystem throughput counters (bytes in/out). Its monitoring value is squarely in storage capacity and performance health, letting an operator track free space depletion, monitor network and filesystem I/O throughput per node, and confirm which OneFS software version a node is running. It is a vendor-specific extension used alongside Isilon's other cluster management MIBs rather than depending on general IETF storage standards. It is typically deployed in enterprise or media/broadcast environments running Isilon OneFS clusters for large-scale unstructured data storage. Engineers can download the ONEFS-SNAPSHOT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ssFreeBlocks against ssTotalBlocks (combined with ssBlockSize) per ssLocalNodeId to calculate free capacity on each cluster node, alerting when free space drops toward zero. Watching ssNetBytesIn/ssNetBytesOut and ssFilesystemBytesIn/ssFilesystemBytesOut over a ssTimeStart-to-ssTimeEnd sampling interval reveals network or filesystem throughput spikes indicating heavy client load or a rebalancing job. Checking ssSoftwareVersion across ssNodeInfo entries lets an operator confirm all cluster nodes are running a consistent OneFS release before a cluster-wide operation.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ssFreeBlocks OID:

Select a Dell EMC/Isilon OneFS storage cluster node (capacity/throughput statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ssFreeBlocks into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the free Blocks on this cluster. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
