Category: Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport, SNA / Legacy Protocols

Description: Defines SNMP objects for SNA protocol and DLSw gateway management on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SnaMIB?

This Nortel MscPassport MIB governs SNA (Systems Network Architecture) protocol support and DLSw (Data Link Switching) gateway functionality on Passport switches, used to carry legacy IBM mainframe traffic over modern WAN backbones. It exposes port-level provisioning and administrative-control tables covering SNMP administrative status, storage type, and circuit associations for each SNA port instance. The MIB primarily supports monitoring the software/administrative status of SNA ports and DLSw circuits -- whether a port is administratively up, its row/provisioning state, and its associated circuit -- serving as a configuration and service-availability check for mainframe connectivity rather than exposing hardware sensors. As with other MscPassport modules it depends on the shared vendor component/row-status modeling convention across the Passport MIB family. It is deployed on legacy Nortel/Alcatel Passport switches used as DLSw/SNA gateways bridging SNA traffic between branch offices and mainframe data centers, and administrators can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SnaMIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-SnaMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Alcatel-Lucent Passport switch (DLSw/SNA gateway)
  • MscPassport carrier switching platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mscVrPpSnaPortAdminControlTable's mscVrPpSnaPortSnmpAdminStatus for a given mscVrPpSnaPortIndex to confirm an SNA port is administratively enabled, then check mscVrPpSnaPortRowStatus to verify the provisioning row is active. Cross-referencing mscVrPpSnaPortCircuit shows which circuit an SNA port is bound to. A port showing an admin-down status or a row stuck in a non-active state indicates an SNA/DLSw gateway path that has failed to come into service, disrupting mainframe traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNA port administrative status
  • SNA port row/provisioning status
  • SNA port circuit association
  • component storage type
