Category: Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport

Description: Provides SNMP objects for MPOA/NHRP shortcut connection management on Nortel MsCarrier MscPassport ATM switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-ShortcutConnectionMIB?

This Nortel MscPassport MIB module manages MPOA (Multi-Protocol over ATM) and NHRP shortcut connections on Passport ATM switches, which allow traffic between subnets to bypass intermediate routers via direct ATM virtual circuits. It exposes operational and provisioning tables giving the remote NBMA address, connection age, and MTU of each shortcut, plus the standard row-status/component tables for configuration state. The MIB is used to monitor the software/session status of shortcut connections -- confirming a shortcut is established, tracking its age since creation, and validating negotiated MTU -- rather than physical hardware health. It builds on ATM Forum MPOA and IETF NHRP concepts layered on the vendor's Passport component/row-status framework. Typical deployment is on legacy Nortel/Alcatel Passport ATM switches providing MPOA edge/server functions in carrier ATM backbones. Engineers can download the Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-ShortcutConnectionMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-MsCarrier-MscPassport-ShortcutConnectionMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Alcatel-Lucent Passport ATM switch
  • MscPassport carrier switching platform

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can poll mscVrPpScOperTable to read mscVrPpScRemoteNbmaAddress, mscVrPpScAge, and mscVrPpScMtu for a shortcut identified by mscVrPpScIndex to confirm the direct ATM path to a remote NBMA peer is up and using the expected MTU. A shortcut whose mscVrPpScAge resets frequently suggests the connection is repeatedly torn down and re-established, indicating an unstable shortcut. Checking mscVrPpScRowStatus alongside these operational values distinguishes a provisioning failure from a live but flapping shortcut.

What Can Be Monitored

  • shortcut connection row status
  • remote NBMA address
  • shortcut connection age
  • negotiated MTU
