Category: Network Management

Description: Defines Nokia common alarm reporting objects for fault severity, type, and notification dispatch.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NOKIA-COMMON-ALARM-REPORTING-MIB?

NOKIA-COMMON-ALARM-REPORTING-MIB is a Nokia vendor MIB providing a common alarm-reporting framework used across Nokia network-element product lines, standardizing how fault conditions are represented and notified via SNMP. It exposes alarm text, alarm/trap identifiers, correlation IDs linking related alarms, row/column location of the fault, and severity level, along with traps for events such as link up/down. This is fundamentally a fault-monitoring MIB: it lets an operator track active-alarm counts, the time alarms last changed, and the severity and detailed text of each fault, which is the primary way to detect hardware or software problems (e.g., a link failure signaled via caReportLinkUpLinkDownTraps) on a Nokia network element. As a "common" module it is designed to be shared/imported by many other Nokia product-specific MIBs that generate alarms, making it a foundational dependency across the Nokia MIB tree. It is deployed across Nokia telecom network elements (e.g., routers, transport, and access platforms) as the shared alarm/fault-reporting layer. Engineers can download the NOKIA-COMMON-ALARM-REPORTING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NOKIA-COMMON-ALARM-REPORTING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia network element (router/transport/access platform)

Monitoring Examples

An NMS would subscribe to caReportNokiaAlarmTraps and caReportLinkUpLinkDownTraps to receive real-time fault notifications, then use caAlarmText, caSeverity, and caTrapId to display and triage the alarm, with caCorrelatedAlarmId used to group related alarms from a single root-cause event. Polling calActiveAlarmCount and calContentsChangeTime would reveal whether the number of active alarms on the element has grown or whether the alarm table has recently changed, indicating a new fault condition needing investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active alarm count
  • alarm severity
  • alarm text/description
  • correlated alarm grouping
  • link up/down events
  • alarm table last-change time
