Description: Monitors OSPF routing state within virtual router contexts on Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewalls.

Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETSCREEN-VR-OSPF-MIB?

NETSCREEN-VR-OSPF-MIB is a Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) vendor MIB describing the NetScreen implementation of OSPF version 2 as it runs within a virtual router (VR) context. No sample objects were available in this entry, so specifics beyond the stated purpose cannot be confirmed. In general such a MIB would expose OSPF area, interface, and neighbor state scoped per virtual router, mirroring the structure of the standard OSPF MIB (RFC 1850/OSPF-MIB) but applied within NetScreen's VR model. Its monitoring value would be software/protocol status: tracking neighbor adjacency state and area configuration to detect OSPF adjacency failures or misconfiguration within a given VR. It clearly depends on both the standard OSPF-MIB conventions and the NetScreen virtual-router (NETSCREEN-VR-MIB) framework for its per-VR scoping. It would be deployed on Juniper NetScreen firewalls using OSPF as their dynamic routing protocol within one or more virtual routers. Engineers can download the NETSCREEN-VR-OSPF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-VR-OSPF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper NetScreen firewall (OSPF within virtual router)

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this MIB, so a concrete object-level monitoring scenario cannot be honestly constructed; in general, an administrator would expect to poll OSPF neighbor and interface state scoped to a specific virtual router to detect adjacency loss or area misconfiguration, analogous to the standard OSPF-MIB.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nsVrOspfOriginateNewLsas OID:

Select a Juniper NetScreen firewall (OSPFv2 within virtual router) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nsVrOspfOriginateNewLsas into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of new link-state advertisements that have been originated. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
