Category: OSPF
Description: Specifies SNMP traps that notify on OSPF neighbor state transitions and routing events for NetScreen firewalls.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NETSCREEN-OSPF-TRAP-MIB?
NETSCREEN-OSPF-TRAP-MIB is a Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) private enterprise MIB that defines SNMP notifications specifically for OSPFv2 protocol events on NetScreen firewall/security appliances. It exposes trap-control and trap objects that signal changes in OSPF neighbor adjacency and routing state rather than continuously polled counters. For monitoring software status, it is used to detect routing faults and instability -- such as an OSPF neighbor going down or a routing adjacency flapping -- which is a proxy for the health of the device's dynamic-routing process. As an OSPF-specific extension it conceptually depends on the semantics of the standard OSPF-MIB/OSPF-TRAP-MIB defined by IETF RFC 1850, tailored to NetScreen's trap-control model. It is typically deployed on NetScreen/Juniper firewalls acting as OSPF routers at enterprise or service-provider network edges where routing-protocol stability must be tracked in real time. Engineers can download the NETSCREEN-OSPF-TRAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-OSPF-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Juniper NetScreen firewall
- NetScreen ScreenOS security appliance
Monitoring Examples
An admin enables nsOspfTrapControl so the device emits notifications defined under nsOspfTraps whenever an OSPF neighbor state transitions (e.g., Full to Down). Receiving repeated traps under nsOspfTraps without a matching recovery event indicates a flapping or failed OSPF adjacency, prompting investigation of a WAN link or misconfigured area. Since this module only defines trap-control and notification objects, there are no pollable performance counters -- it is consumed passively via an SNMP trap receiver rather than periodic GET polling.
What Can Be Monitored
- OSPF neighbor state changes
- OSPF trap enable/disable status
- routing adjacency flaps
