Description: Monitors BGP4 routing within virtual router instances on Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewall platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETSCREEN-VR-BGP4-MIB?

NETSCREEN-VR-BGP4-MIB is a Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) private enterprise MIB that extends BGP4 routing visibility to the per-virtual-router context on NetScreen firewalls, since ScreenOS firewalls can host multiple independent virtual router (VR) routing instances. Conceptually it exposes BGP peering and routing data -- such as peer identity, session state, and advertised routes -- scoped to each virtual router, mirroring the kind of data found in the standard BGP4-MIB. In a monitoring context this is used to confirm the software-level routing health of each VR instance, primarily whether configured BGP peers are established and exchanging routes, rather than any hardware attribute. It is modeled on and dependent on the concepts of the standard IETF BGP4-MIB, adapted to NetScreen's multi-VR architecture. It is typically deployed on NetScreen/Juniper firewalls that run BGP for dynamic routing across multiple virtual-router contexts, such as multi-tenant or segmented network edges, where administrators can get the NETSCREEN-VR-BGP4-MIB download to load into their SNMP tooling.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-VR-BGP4-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper NetScreen firewall
  • NetScreen ScreenOS security appliance

Monitoring Examples

No concrete object or table names were included in this extract, so no specific object can be cited with confidence; the module description indicates only that it defines BGP4 monitoring "for NS-BGP-4." In practice such a MIB would be expected to expose per-VR analogues of standard BGP4-MIB objects (e.g., peer address, peer state, established/idle transitions) so an admin could confirm a given virtual router's BGP peer is Established rather than flapping. Without the underlying object list, however, a more specific polling scenario would be speculative.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BGP peer state per virtual router
  • BGP peering configuration per VR

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nsVrBgpPeerInUpdates OID:

Select a Juniper NetScreen firewall (BGP4 per virtual-router) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nsVrBgpPeerInUpdates into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of BGP UPDATE messages received on this connection. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
