Category: BGP

Description: Monitors BGP4 peer session state, prefix counts, and routing table data on Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewalls.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETSCREEN-BGP4-MIB?

NETSCREEN-BGP4-MIB is a vendor MIB from Juniper's NetScreen line (ScreenOS-based security appliances) that extends BGP4 routing visibility beyond the standard BGP4-MIB. It exposes BGP peer session data, prefix counts, and routing table information specific to the NS-BGP-4 implementation. Its core monitoring purpose is protocol/software status rather than physical hardware: tracking peer session establishment state, route counts, and BGP-related error conditions lets an operator detect a flapping or down BGP neighbor, a route-count anomaly, or a misconfigured peering session on the firewall's routing engine. Because it augments rather than replaces the IETF standard BGP4-MIB (RFC 1657/4273), it depends heavily on that base MIB's object model and conventions. It is deployed on Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewalls and security appliances that participate in BGP-based dynamic routing at network edges or between security zones. Engineers can download the NETSCREEN-BGP4-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-BGP4-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewall
  • security appliance with BGP routing

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were supplied for this module, so specific object names cannot be grounded here; in general use, an operator would poll BGP peer state and prefix-count objects analogous to the standard bgpPeerTable to detect a peer transitioning out of the Established state or a sudden drop in received route counts, indicating a routing adjacency failure.
