Category: Net-SNMP and Linux
Description: Defines example objects under the Net-SNMP enterprise tree used for demonstration and testing of Net-SNMP agent extensibility features.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB?
NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB is a demonstration and testing module bundled with the open-source Net-SNMP agent, illustrating how custom objects and agent extension modules can be implemented rather than representing any commercial hardware vendor's product. It exposes example scalar objects (integers, strings, and a deliberately slow-responding "sleeper" object), a sample IETF working group table, and a sample hosts table, none of which reflect real production data. Rather than monitoring genuine hardware or software health, this MIB is used to validate SNMP agent extensibility, notification handling, and poller behavior against known values -- for instance, using the sleeper object to test how a management station handles delayed responses. It depends on the core Net-SNMP agent framework (and optionally AgentX) rather than on any standard IETF or vendor MIB hierarchy. It is found only on systems running the Net-SNMP daemon (snmpd) with example modules enabled, typically for developer training or SNMP tool testing. Engineers can download the NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NET-SNMP-EXAMPLES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Linux/Unix hosts running the Net-SNMP agent (snmpd)
- vendor-neutral demonstration module, not tied to specific hardware
Monitoring Examples
An engineer testing a new polling tool could walk netSnmpExampleScalars to read netSnmpExampleInteger and netSnmpExampleString as known baseline values, then poll netSnmpExampleSleeper to confirm the tool correctly handles a deliberately delayed SNMP response instead of timing out prematurely. The netSnmpIETFWGTable (nsIETFWGName, nsIETFWGChair1, nsIETFWGChair2) and netSnmpHostsTable (netSnmpHostName, netSnmpHostAddressType) provide sample tabular data for practicing table-walk logic, though none of it reflects real device state.
What Can Be Monitored
- example integer/string scalar values
- sleeper object for delayed-response/timeout testing
- example IETF working group table entries
- example hosts table entries

RFC description
NET-SNMP example MIB objects for agent module reference implementations.
Start monitoring Linux/Unix host running Net-SNMP agent (demonstration module, not real hardware) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
