Description: A demonstration MIB module from the UCD-SNMP (Net-SNMP) project, used as an example for developing custom MIB extensions.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring UCD-DEMO-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is UCD-DEMO-MIB?

UCD-DEMO-MIB is a sample/demonstration MIB module distributed with the UCD-SNMP project (the predecessor to Net-SNMP), intended purely as a teaching example for developers writing custom SNMP agent extensions. It exposes a handful of placeholder objects such as a public string, a user list, a passphrase-like value, and a reset-keys control, none of which correspond to real operational telemetry. It has essentially no role in monitoring actual hardware or software status; it exists to illustrate how to define scalar objects, tables, and a simple agent module rather than to report uptime, temperature, CPU load, or any other health metric. It has no meaningful dependency on other MIBs beyond the standard SNMPv2-SMI/textual-conventions used by any Net-SNMP module. In practice this MIB is not deployed in production monitoring; it appears only in Net-SNMP source trees and documentation as a reference implementation for new MIB authors, so the UCD-DEMO-MIB MIB is best treated as a teaching aid rather than a monitoring target.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in UCD-DEMO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based demo MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • Net-SNMP / UCD-SNMP agent test installations

Monitoring Examples

The only objects present, such as ucdDemoPublicString, ucdDemoUserList, and ucdDemoResetKeys, are illustrative scalars with no real-world semantics, so there is no genuine monitoring scenario to describe. An admin would not poll this MIB for operational insight; at most a developer might GET ucdDemoPublicString to confirm their test agent build is responding correctly. This is effectively a code-example module, not a production monitoring target.

RFC description

UCD-SNMP demonstration MIB for testing SNMPv3 key management and security passphrase functionality.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based demo MIB, Net-SNMP / UCD-SNMP agent test installations (placeholder objects, no real telemetry) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
