Category: Net-SNMP and Linux, Network Interfaces, Vendor: Cumulus Networks

Description: Provides interface traffic counters, error statistics, and performance metrics for Cumulus Linux switch ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CUMULUS-COUNTERS-MIB?

CUMULUS-COUNTERS-MIB is a Cumulus Networks (Cumulus Linux) proprietary MIB that extends standard interface counters with more granular, reason-specific packet-discard statistics for switch ports running Cumulus Linux. It exposes a discard-counters table breaking out ingress packet discards by specific reason (e.g., buffer exhaustion, ACL drop, or similar switch-silicon-level causes) alongside system-specific counter objects. This MIB is squarely a performance/fault-monitoring module: it is used to monitor software/hardware traffic-handling health by revealing why packets are being dropped on a given interface, essential for diagnosing congestion, misconfiguration, or hardware-buffer issues on white-box switches. It depends on and complements the standard IF-MIB, since its discard counters are indexed against standard interface identifiers rather than duplicating basic interface statistics. It is deployed on Cumulus Linux-based white-box/bare-metal switches in data center and enterprise network fabrics. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CUMULUS-COUNTERS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CUMULUS-COUNTERS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cumulus Linux white-box/bare-metal switch

Monitoring Examples

A network engineer can poll discardCountersTable / discardCountersEntry per interface to see which specific discard reason is incrementing, distinguishing, for example, an ACL-drop condition from a buffer-overflow condition on a congested top-of-rack switch port. Rising values in sysSpecificCounters alongside a spike in one particular discard-reason column would point an admin toward a specific root cause (e.g., a misapplied ACL vs. genuine oversubscription) rather than a generic 'discards' figure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ingress discard count by reason
  • per-interface packet discards
  • system-specific discard counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using l3v4InDiscards OID:

Select a Cumulus Linux white-box switch (packet-discard counters) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type l3v4InDiscards into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of inbound IPv4 packets discarded by the routing engine. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
