Category: Optical Networking

Description: Provides diagnostic and inventory data for SFF/SFP/XFP optical transceiver modules installed in NBS equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NBS-SFF-MIB?

NBS-SFF-MIB is a private MRV/NBS MIB implementing the SFF Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) standard for small form-factor pluggable optical transceivers such as SFP, SFP+, and XFP modules. It exposes transceiver inventory and diagnostic data including identifier type, optical connector type, transceiver code, encoding, nominal bit rate, and supported link lengths over single-mode and multi-mode fiber. This MIB is squarely a hardware-status MIB: it lets monitoring systems verify that the correct type of pluggable optic is installed and read back its physical/optical characteristics, which is essential for detecting incompatible, degraded, or mis-provisioned optics before they cause link failures. It is grounded in the industry SFF-8472/SFF MSA standards for transceiver diagnostics rather than a proprietary NBS scheme. It is deployed on NBS/MRV optical Ethernet and transport platforms wherever pluggable optical modules are used, and administrators can download the NBS-SFF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-SFF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • MRV/NBS optical network element with SFP/SFP+/XFP slots
  • carrier optical transport/access equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll nbsSffMsaTable/nbsSffMsaEntry keyed by nbsSffMsaPhysicalIfIndex to read nbsSffMsaIdentifier, nbsSffMsaTransceiverCodes, and nbsSffMsaNominalBitRate, confirming the installed optic matches the expected type and speed for that port. Checking nbsSffMsaLinkLengthSmfKm or nbsSffMsaLinkLengthMmf10m against the actual fiber run length helps catch a transceiver rated for the wrong distance being installed. A sudden change in nbsSffMsaVendorOUI-like identity fields (via nbsSffMsaExtIdentifier) after a module swap would prompt verification that the replacement optic is qualified for that port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed transceiver type/identifier
  • optical connector type
  • nominal bit rate
  • supported link length (SMF/MMF)
  • transceiver encoding scheme
