Description: Monitors SmartOptics M-Series environmental sensors including temperature and fans.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MSERIES-ENVMON-MIB?

MSERIES-ENVMON-MIB is an enterprise-specific environmental monitoring MIB for SmartOptics M-Series optical/transport equipment, a vendor technology area centered on optical networking hardware. It exposes environmental sensor data, primarily temperature readings, from a table of monitored points on the device along with descriptive labels for each sensor. This MIB is squarely a hardware health monitoring module: it lets administrators track temperature values across the chassis to detect overheating conditions that could precede hardware failure or trigger protective shutdowns. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB with no stated dependency on other standard MIBs beyond basic SNMP/SMI conventions. It is typically deployed in optical transport network operations centers monitoring the physical/environmental health of M-Series shelves and modules. Engineers can download the MSERIES-ENVMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MSERIES-ENVMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • SmartOptics M-Series optical transport chassis

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll smartEnvMonTemperatureTable, iterating over smartEnvMonTemperatureEntry rows indexed by smartEnvMonTemperatureIndex, to read smartEnvMonTemperatureDescr (the sensor's location/label) and smartEnvMonTemperatureValue (the current reading) for each monitored point on the chassis. A temperature value trending upward or exceeding a defined threshold on a specific sensor would reveal a cooling fan failure or blocked airflow requiring attention before the module overheats. This directly maps to the temperature table and its index/description/value columns confirmed in the sample objects.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis temperature readings
  • per-sensor temperature description
  • environmental sensor index
  • overheating conditions

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using smartEnvMonTemperatureValue OID:

Select a SmartOptics M-Series optical transport chassis (environmental/temperature) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type smartEnvMonTemperatureValue into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The temperature in Celsius measured by the sensor. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
