Description: Monitors NBS chassis fan tray speed, status, and cooling fault notifications.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NBS-FAN-MIB?
NBS-FAN-MIB is a vendor MIB (NBS/Riverstone-family chassis systems) dedicated to monitoring cooling fan trays within a modular network device chassis. It exposes a fan table keyed by parent interface/part index and fan index, providing per-fan description, operational status, and speed readings. This is explicitly a hardware environmental-health MIB: its entire purpose is to let an operator detect fan failures or degraded cooling, which is critical because sustained fan loss leads to overheating and downstream hardware faults or shutdowns in the chassis. As a small, focused hardware MIB it has no notable dependency on other standard MIBs beyond basic SMI/interface indexing conventions. It is deployed in chassis-based network equipment (switches/routers) where redundant fan trays cool line cards and supervisor modules. Engineers can download the NBS-FAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-FAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- NBS/Riverstone-family modular chassis switch or router
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll nbsFanFanTable/nbsFanFanEntry, using nbsFanFanParentIfIndex and nbsFanFanIndex to identify each physical fan, and check nbsFanFanStatus for a fault/failed state combined with nbsFanFanSpeed dropping toward zero. A degraded nbsFanFanSpeed reading on one fan while nbsFanFanTableSize indicates a redundant tray would flag a fan needing replacement before a second failure causes overheating. nbsFanFanDescription would identify which physical fan module to service.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-fan operational status
- fan speed
- fan description/location
- total fan count in chassis
