Category: ATM, Products/Registration

Description: Provides proprietary extensions to ATM Forum MPOA protocol management objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MPOA-EXT-MIB?

MPOA-EXT-MIB is a proprietary MIB (using a "cn" object prefix suggestive of a legacy ATM/LAN networking vendor) that provides proprietary extensions to the ATM Forum's Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) standard MIB objects. It exposes configuration data for MPOA Client (MPC) resources, including shared VCC (virtual channel connection) control and data connections, flow-detection thresholds (minimum flow packet count), and IP address verification table settings. Its monitoring value centers on configuration and connection-resource status for MPOA clients — tracking VCC resource usage and IP-to-ATM address verification/caching behavior, which would reveal MPOA shortcut connections being under- or mis-provisioned. It is explicitly dependent on the ATM Forum's standard MPOA MIB, which it extends, since this module supplements rather than replaces the base MPOA object set. It would be deployed on legacy ATM-based LAN emulation/MPOA-capable routers and switches in networks using ATM shortcut routing between IP subnets, a largely legacy technology, and the MPOA-EXT-MIB reference remains relevant when auditing older ATM shortcut-routing deployments still in service.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MPOA-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • legacy ATM Forum MPOA-capable routers/switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cnMpcConfigTable/cnMpcConfigEntry to check cnMpcShareControlVccs and cnMpcShareDataVccs, confirming how many shared VCCs an MPOA client is using for control versus data traffic, and would check cnMpcValidEntryCheckInterval and cnMpcMinFlowPacketCount to verify flow-detection thresholds for triggering MPOA shortcuts. Checking cnMpoaIpVerificationTable/cnMpoaIpVerificationEntry status would reveal whether IP-to-ATM address verification entries are being correctly downloaded and validated, which would explain failed MPOA shortcut connection setup if stale.

What Can Be Monitored

  • shared VCC control/data connection counts
  • MPOA flow-detection thresholds
  • IP address verification table status
  • MPOA client configuration state
