Description: Implements IETF RFC 4124 SNMP management objects for Diff-Serv-aware Traffic Engineering bandwidth constraints on MPLS networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MPLS-DSTE-MIB?

MPLS-DSTE-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB (RFC 4124) that defines managed objects for Diff-Serv-aware MPLS Traffic Engineering, letting network operators manage bandwidth constraint models on TE-enabled interfaces. It exposes configuration and performance data in the traffic-engineering category: bandwidth constraint models, per-class maximum bandwidth allocations, and overbooking/multiplier objects for up to eight traffic-engineering classes per interface. Its role is primarily in performance and capacity monitoring rather than physical hardware health -- administrators use it to track how much reserved bandwidth is consumed versus configured per class on each TE interface, which surfaces congestion or misconfigured bandwidth pools rather than device faults. It explicitly depends on the base MPLS-TE-MIB and MPLS-LSR-MIB for interface and tunnel context, and on the Diff-Serv architecture (DSTE-REQ/DSTE-PROTO) it implements. It is typically deployed on MPLS provider-edge and core routers running DiffServ-aware traffic engineering to enforce SLA-based bandwidth guarantees. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the MPLS-DSTE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MPLS-DSTE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • MPLS provider-edge and core routers supporting Diff-Serv-aware Traffic Engineering

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mplsDsTeIfBCTable (via mplsDsTeIfBCEntry) to read the eight per-class bandwidth constraint objects mplsDsTeIfBC0MaxBw through mplsDsTeIfBC7MaxBw on a given TE interface, revealing how much bandwidth is reserved for each traffic-engineering class. Combined with mplsDsTeBwConstraintModel, this shows which bandwidth-constraint model (e.g. Russian Doll or Maximum Allocation) is active, and comparing configured mplsDsTeIfBCn MaxBw values against actual reserved bandwidth (from mplsDsTeIfLOMTable) would reveal an interface approaching its class-based bandwidth ceiling before new LSPs are rejected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-class bandwidth constraint model
  • per-interface max bandwidth per TE class
  • bandwidth overbooking multiplier
  • reserved vs. available bandwidth per class
