Category: RMON

Description: Defines MMB communication module trap notifications for hardware and link events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MMB-ComTrap-MIB?

MMB-ComTrap-MIB is a vendor-specific trap MIB defining SNMP notifications produced by an MMB (management/monitoring board) communications module used in modular chassis-based equipment. Rather than defining polled data tables, it exposes trap payload objects that carry event context, such as the affected unit, partition, and event severity, for hardware and link-related fault conditions. Its central monitoring role is fault reporting: traps carry a system event log (SEL) message, event level/severity, event and detail IDs, and identifying data like part number, serial number, and the unit name, letting an operator immediately see which physical module and partition triggered a hardware alert. It has an implicit dependency on the enterprise MIB tree (imports from an enterprises registration point) and is typically paired with a companion status/inventory MIB for the same hardware platform. It is deployed in modular blade/chassis systems where an MMB acts as a management/communications controller board reporting events up to a network management station. Engineers can download the MMB-ComTrap-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MMB-ComTrap-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Modular chassis/blade system management board (MMB)

Monitoring Examples

An admin monitoring trapSelEventLevel and trapSelEventId can immediately detect a critical hardware fault reported via trapSelMessage, cross-referencing trapUnitName and trapPartitionId to isolate which blade or partition raised it. Fields like trapPartNo and trapSerialNo let the NMS log the exact field-replaceable unit involved, while trapMmbVip identifies the management board's virtual IP for correlation across a redundant pair. This supports rapid triage of chassis hardware failures purely from trap content rather than polling.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware fault/event level
  • system event log messages
  • affected unit and partition identity
  • module part number and serial number
  • management board virtual IP
