Category: RMON
Description: Extends probe configuration objects for 3Com RMON monitoring appliances.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is A3COM0034-PROBECONFIG-EXTENSION?
A3COM0034-PROBECONFIG-EXTENSION is a 3Com vendor MIB that extends the configuration objects of 3Com's RMON monitoring probe appliances, covering network-level bootstrap configuration for the probe device itself. It exposes objects for the probe's network configuration table, including its default gateway and whether it uses BOOTP for address assignment. Its monitoring/management relevance is centered on confirming the probe appliance's own network configuration is correct, i.e., verifying the monitoring probe has the right gateway and BOOTP setting so it can reach the network it's supposed to be monitoring, a basic configuration-health check for the monitoring infrastructure rather than the monitored network itself. As an "extension," it explicitly depends on and supplements the base 3Com RMON probe configuration MIB, so it is used in conjunction with that base MIB rather than standalone. It's deployed on legacy 3Com RMON probe/monitoring appliances used to capture and analyze traffic on 3Com network segments. Engineers can download the A3COM0034-PROBECONFIG-EXTENSION file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0034-PROBECONFIG-EXTENSION. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- 3Com RMON monitoring probe/appliance
Monitoring Examples
Reading extNetConfigTable/extNetConfigEntry returns extNetConfigDefaultGateway and extNetConfigBootP, letting an administrator confirm the probe is configured with the correct default gateway and BOOTP setting; a probe unreachable from the NMS could be diagnosed by checking whether its default gateway is misconfigured. Since this is a small configuration-extension table rather than a runtime-statistics MIB, its use is limited to confirming/adjusting the probe's basic network settings rather than tracking live traffic metrics.
What Can Be Monitored
- probe default gateway configuration
- probe BOOTP configuration
