Category: Wireless/WiFi

Description: Monitors comprehensive WLAN operational statistics and AP status on Meru Networks controllers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MERU-WLAN-MIB?

MERU-WLAN-MIB is a Meru Networks (WLAN vendor, later acquired by Fortinet) MIB defining SNMP trap notifications for its wireless LAN controller infrastructure. It belongs to the wireless-networking management category and, per its notification-oriented object set, is used to signal controller-level events rather than expose a rich set of polled statistics tables. Its monitoring value is centered on fault/event and software-state notification — mwlGlobalReboot signals that the WLAN controller has restarted (an availability event), mwlGlobalSave signals a configuration-save event, and mwlWncNodeReg reports access-point registration with the controller, all useful for tracking controller and AP software/service status changes. The module description states it "defines the traps from Meru WLAN infrastructure," making it explicitly a notification module layered on the broader Meru WLAN enterprise MIB tree (meru-products, meru-reg, meru-reqs) rather than a self-contained standard. It is deployed on Meru Networks wireless LAN controllers and access points in enterprise Wi-Fi environments, where a network management system subscribes to these traps for near-real-time alerts on reboots, configuration changes, and AP join events. Engineers can download the MERU-WLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MERU-WLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Meru Networks wireless LAN controllers and access points

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system would subscribe to mwlGlobalReboot to be immediately alerted whenever a Meru WLAN controller restarts unexpectedly, and combined with mwlTrapContent (carrying descriptive trap text) can help diagnose whether the reboot was a crash or a planned action. Receiving mwlWncNodeReg traps lets an admin track access points joining or leaving the controller, revealing a flapping AP if the same node repeatedly registers and deregisters. Because the visible objects here are trap definitions rather than polled statistics tables, this MIB is best understood as an event/fault-notification module rather than a general Wi-Fi performance-monitoring MIB.

What Can Be Monitored

  • controller reboot events
  • configuration save events
  • trap descriptive content
