Category: Switch Management

Description: Manages software image updates and firmware upgrade status on Mellanox switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-SW-UPDATE-MIB?

MELLANOX-SW-UPDATE-MIB is a Mellanox (now part of NVIDIA) enterprise MIB for managing software/firmware image updates on Mellanox Ethernet and InfiniBand switches. It exposes a partition table describing the switch's firmware image slots along with a command interface for triggering and tracking update operations. This MIB is directly about software status: it reports which firmware partition is active (mellanoxSWActivePartition), what is configured to boot next (mellanoxSWPartitionBootNext), and the real-time progress/result of an in-flight update (mellanoxSWUpdateCmdStatus, mellanoxSWUpdateCmdStatusString). It is a self-contained proprietary MIB, though it operates alongside Mellanox's broader switch system/chassis MIBs for identifying the target device. It is used in data-center and HPC fabric deployments where administrators remotely stage and monitor firmware upgrades across fleets of Mellanox switches without needing console access. Engineers can download the MELLANOX-SW-UPDATE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-SW-UPDATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox Ethernet switches
  • Mellanox InfiniBand switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin can poll mellanoxSWTable/mellanoxSWEntry indexed by mellanoxSWPartitionIndex to read mellanoxSWPartitionName and mellanoxSWPartitionActive, confirming which firmware image is running, then set mellanoxSWUpdateCmdUri and mellanoxSWUpdateCmdExecute to push a new image and poll mellanoxSWUpdateCmdStatus/mellanoxSWUpdateCmdStatusString until it reports success or failure. A mismatch between mellanoxSWActivePartition and the intended mellanoxSWPartitionBootNext after a reboot would reveal a failed or rolled-back firmware upgrade.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active firmware partition
  • boot-next partition selection
  • firmware update command status
  • update progress/result string
