Category: Switch Management

Description: Provides top-level management and system status for Mellanox Technologies network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-MIB?

MELLANOX-MIB is a Mellanox Technologies (now part of NVIDIA) vendor MIB providing top-level system management and hardware/software identification objects for Mellanox networking devices such as InfiniBand and Ethernet switches. It exposes system-level inventory data (serial number, software version, build info, node name) as well as a process table for monitoring internal software processes running on the device. It is explicitly used to monitor both hardware identity (serial number) and software status, including process status and process failure counts, letting administrators detect crashed or repeatedly failing internal daemons. As a vendor MIB it typically sits under the enterprise mellanoxProducts/mellanoxMgmt subtree and works alongside other Mellanox-specific MIBs (e.g., power-cycle, environment) rather than replacing standard MIB-II. It is deployed on Mellanox switches and network interface cards in data center and HPC (InfiniBand) environments, and administrators can download the MELLANOX-MIB file to load into their MIB browser for polling.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox (NVIDIA) InfiniBand/Ethernet switches
  • Mellanox network interface cards

Monitoring Examples

An operator queries swVersion and buildInfo to confirm which firmware release is running on a switch before a fleet-wide upgrade, and checks serialNumber and nodeName to positively identify the unit in inventory. Polling procTable/procEntry for procStatus and procNumFailures across each procName reveals whether an internal management process has crashed or restarted repeatedly, which would explain intermittent management-plane issues on the switch. A rising procNumFailures count for a specific procName over time would prompt the admin to investigate that particular software component rather than the switch hardware as a whole.

What Can Be Monitored

  • software version/build info
  • serial number/node name
  • process status per process
  • process failure counts
