Last Updated: 2011-01-31

Category: Switch Management

Description: Defines initial generation management objects for Mellanox Technologies network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-MIB-1?

This is an early-generation Mellanox Technologies vendor MIB module defining basic device management objects for Mellanox network devices (switches/gateways). It exposes general system identity information such as device type, serial number, software version, build info, and node name, along with a process table listing running processes, their status, and failure counts. It is explicitly used to monitor both hardware identity (serial number, node name) and software health of the device, most notably process status and process failure counts, which reveal whether critical software daemons on the switch are running normally or have crashed/restarted. As a first-generation proprietary MIB it stands apart from more structured later Mellanox MIBs, with no notable dependency on IETF standard MIBs beyond basic SNMP framework objects. It is deployed on legacy Mellanox switches/gateways where basic inventory and process-health monitoring is needed. Engineers can download the MELLANOX-MIB-1 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-MIB-1. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox network switch/gateway

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll swVersion and buildInfo to confirm the running software release on a device, and serialNumber/nodeName for asset inventory purposes. procTable / procEntry indexed by procIndex exposes procName, procStatus, and procNumFailures for each monitored process, letting an admin detect a critical management process that has crashed or is repeatedly failing and restarting. mellanoxProducts and mellanoxMgmt/generalMgmt act as the OID registration branches under which these and future Mellanox MIB objects are organized.

What Can Be Monitored

  • device serial number
  • software/build version
  • node name
  • process status
  • process failure count
