Category: Switch Management

Description: Defines second-generation management objects for Mellanox Technologies network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-MIB-2?

MELLANOX-MIB-2 is a second-generation Mellanox Technologies enterprise MIB defining general system management objects for Mellanox network devices. It exposes system identity data (device type, serial number, software version, build info, node name) and a management process table tracking process name, status, and failure count, under the mellanoxProducts/mellanoxMgmt OID subtree. It is used mainly for software/process health monitoring: a nonzero or climbing process failure count flags a crashing or restarting internal daemon, while the version fields support firmware inventory tracking. It is a standalone enterprise MIB with no strong dependency on external standards MIBs, though it was later paralleled by MELLANOX-MIB-3 for newer product generations. It is deployed for general system health monitoring on earlier-generation Mellanox network devices. Engineers can download the MELLANOX-MIB-2 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-MIB-2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox network device (legacy generation)

Monitoring Examples

Reading swVersion, buildInfo, and serialNumber inventories firmware and hardware identity. Walking procTable by procIndex and checking procStatus and procNumFailures detects a hung or repeatedly-crashing internal daemon on the device. A nonzero and climbing procNumFailures is a clear software fault signal worth alerting on.

What Can Be Monitored

  • software version
  • serial number
  • node name
  • internal process status
  • process failure count
