Category: Environmental Monitoring, Hardware Inventory

Description: Tracks operational and administrative state of hardware entities on Mellanox switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MELLANOX-ENTITY-STATE-MIB?

This is a Mellanox (NVIDIA Networking) private MIB tracking the operational and administrative state of hardware entities, such as line cards, modules, or ports, on Mellanox switches. It exposes a state table (mellanoxEntStateTable) recording each module's current state, previous state, and a textual state-change description, alongside notification objects for state-transition traps. Its core purpose is hardware status monitoring: detecting when a module transitions between states such as up, down, initializing, or faulted, and providing a human-readable reason for the transition to speed up root-cause analysis. It is designed to complement the standard ENTITY-MIB, which provides the physical inventory, while this MIB adds richer state-transition detail and history not covered by the standard. It is deployed on Mellanox switches in high-performance data center and HPC fabrics where administrators need fast detection of module/port hardware failures. Engineers can download the MELLANOX-ENTITY-STATE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-ENTITY-STATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox (NVIDIA) network switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll mellanoxEntStateModuleCurrentState against mellanoxEntStateModulePreviousState to detect a module that recently transitioned from 'operational' to a faulted or disabled state. mellanoxEntStateModuleStateDescr provides the specific reason text, useful when a transceiver or line card fails and needs replacement. Subscribing to mellanoxEntStateMibNotifications lets a NOC receive a trap the moment a critical switch module changes state, rather than waiting for the next poll cycle.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware entity current/previous operational state
  • state-change description/reason
  • module state-transition notifications
