Description: GE MDS system-level MIB defining hardware inventory, software version, and operational status objects for GE MDS industrial devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MDS-SYSTEM-MIB?

MDS-SYSTEM-MIB is a GE MDS vendor-specific MIB defining system-level hardware inventory, firmware, and operational status objects for GE MDS Orbit-series industrial wireless/radio devices. It exposes identity and health scalars such as mSysSerialNumberCore/Platform, mSysProductConfiguration, mSysGuid, mSysUptime, mSysTemperature, and mSysPowerSupplyVoltage, plus a firmware inventory table mSysFirmwareVersionTable/Entry (mSysLocation, mSysVersion, mSysActive) and MPR-specific status objects (mSysMprHeatsinkTemperature1/2, mSysMprPowerSupplyVoltage1/2, mSysMprRelaySwitchPosition) for units with that hardware variant. It exposes hardware-health telemetry — temperature, power-supply voltage, firmware slot/version/active state — central to monitoring the physical condition of an industrial radio/gateway rather than network traffic. It depends on the MDS-ORBIT-SMI-MIB enterprise root for OID placement and defines a conformance group distinguishing base status objects from optional MPR-specific ones. It is deployed on GE MDS Orbit industrial radios and gateways used in utility/SCADA communications, and administrators can download the MDS-SYSTEM-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MDS-SYSTEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • GE MDS Orbit-series industrial radios/gateways

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls mSysTemperature and mSysPowerSupplyVoltage to confirm an Orbit radio is operating within normal thermal and power range, and checks mSysFirmwareVersionEntry's mSysActive flag to confirm the expected firmware image is running; a rising mSysTemperature alongside an inactive expected firmware slot would indicate a device running hot on the wrong image, warranting field investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • core/platform serial number and product configuration
  • system temperature and power supply voltage
  • firmware version/active-slot table
  • system uptime and boot time
  • MPR-specific heatsink temperature and relay switch position

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mSysTemperature OID:

Select a GE MDS Orbit-series industrial radio/gateway (system/hardware health) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mSysTemperature into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the system temperature (in Celsius). On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
