What Is IANA-MAU-MIB?

IANA-MAU-MIB is an IETF/IANA-maintained companion module to the standard MAU-MIB, defining dot3MauType object identities and textual conventions (IANAifMauListBits, IANAifMauMediaAvailable, IANAifMauAutoNegCapBits, IANAifJackType) that enumerate Ethernet medium attachment unit (MAU) types, media availability states, auto-negotiation capability bits, and jack types. It contains no operational data objects itself; it exists purely to standardize the enumerated values used by the MAU-MIB's ifMauTypeListBits, ifMauMediaAvailable, ifMauAutoNegCapabilityBits/ifMauAutoNegCapAdvertisedBits/ifMauAutoNegCapReceivedBits, and ifJackType objects. Because it is a shared textual-convention module, it has no direct hardware/software status monitoring role of its own, but it underpins how the MAU-MIB reports physical-layer link type and auto-negotiation status across virtually all Ethernet-capable devices. It is a hard dependency of the standard MAU-MIB (RFC 4836) and any vendor MIB that reuses its conventions. It applies generically to any Ethernet interface hardware on any managed network device, since MAU type identification is a universal Ethernet management need. Engineers can download the IANA-MAU-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-MAU-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any Ethernet-capable network device

Monitoring Examples

This is a textual-convention module with no runtime data objects (sample_objects is empty), so there is no concrete monitoring scenario against it directly; it is imported by the standard MAU-MIB to give meaning to values reported for objects like ifMauTypeListBits and ifJackType on real Ethernet interfaces.

ianaMauMIB1.3.6.1.2.1.154This MIB module defines dot3MauType OBJECT-IDENTITIES and IANAifMauListBits, IANAifMauMediaAvailable, IANAifMauAutoNegCapBits, and IANAifJackType TEXTUAL-CONVENTIONs, specifying enumerated values of the ifMauTypeListBits, ifMauMediaAvailable / rpMauMediaAvailable, ifMauAutoNegCapabilityBits / ifMauAutoNegCapAdvertisedBits / ifMauAutoNegCapReceivedBits and ifJackType / rpJackType objects respectively, defined in the MAU-MIB. It is intended that each new MAU type, Media Availability state, Auto Negotiation capability and/or Jack type defined by the IEEE 802.3 working group and approved for publication in a revision of IEEE Std 802.3 will be added to this MIB module, provided that it is suitable for being managed by the base objects in the MAU-MIB. An Expert Review, as defined in RFC 2434 [RFC2434], is REQUIRED for such additions. The following reference is used throughout this MIB module: [IEEE802.3] refers to IEEE Std 802.3-2022: 'IEEE Standard for Ethernet'. This reference should be updated as appropriate when new MAU types, Media Availability states, Auto Negotiation capabilities, and/or Jack types are added to this MIB module. RFC description

IANA standard MIB defining MAU (Medium Attachment Unit) types and textual conventions for IEEE 802.3 Ethernet physical layer devices (RFC 4836).

Start monitoring Vendor-neutral IANA/IETF standard (any Ethernet-capable network device) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
