What Is LIVINGSTON-PM-GLOBAL-MIB?
LIVINGSTON-PM-GLOBAL-MIB (later carried under the Lucent object prefix after Livingston Enterprises was acquired) is a vendor-specific MIB providing global, system-wide configuration and status objects for PortMaster remote access servers used for dial-up and early broadband RAS deployments. It covers network service configuration such as primary/alternate name servers, syslog host, assigned and reported IP addresses, netmask, domain name, Telnet port, maximum concurrent connections, and routing protocol enablement (OSPF, BGP). Its monitoring relevance leans toward software/configuration status -- confirming the RAS's network-service parameters and connection limits are correctly applied -- along with basic capacity monitoring via maximum concurrent connections. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB, though it would typically be used alongside RADIUS management objects (lucentPMRadiusMgmt) for authentication-related monitoring. It was deployed in ISPs and enterprises operating PortMaster dial-up/remote access concentrators in the 1990s, and a LIVINGSTON-PM-GLOBAL-MIB download is still available today for those maintaining legacy equipment.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LIVINGSTON-PM-GLOBAL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Livingston/Lucent PortMaster remote access server
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll lucentPMGenMaxConsConn to see how close a PortMaster unit is to its maximum concurrent connection limit during peak dial-in hours, and check lucentPMGenAssignedAddr versus lucentPMGenReportedAddr to confirm consistent IP addressing for the unit. Verifying lucentPMGenSyslogHost and lucentPMGenPriNameSrvr/lucentPMGenAltNameSrvr are correctly set ensures logging and name resolution are functioning, while lucentPMGenOSPF/lucentPMGenBGP flags confirm which routing protocols are active on the box.
What Can Be Monitored
- current concurrent connection count vs. maximum
- assigned vs. reported IP address
- DNS/name server configuration
- syslog host configuration
- routing protocol (OSPF/BGP) enablement state
