What Is LIVINGSTON-ROOT-MIB?
LIVINGSTON-ROOT-MIB is a small vendor root-registration MIB, originally from Livingston Enterprises and carried forward under Lucent's enterprise OID (lucent = enterprises.307) after Lucent's acquisition of Livingston. It defines no managed objects of its own — only the OBJECT IDENTIFIER hierarchy (product, lucentPMProduct, lucentPMMib, lucentPM3, lucentPM4) under which the actual PortMaster 3 and PortMaster 4 remote-access-server MIB modules are registered, as documented in the file's accompanying comment tree for the Lucent (RABU) Generic Global Configuration MIB. Because it contains only identifier definitions and no OBJECT-TYPE data, it is not itself pollable for monitoring; its practical value is as the anchor point that lets a MIB browser correctly resolve and load the dependent PortMaster MIB modules that do carry management data (name servers, syslog host, RADIUS settings, and similar). It depends only on the base enterprises OID from RFC1155-SMI and is deployed alongside the Lucent/Livingston PortMaster 3 and PortMaster 4 remote-access server product lines; administrators can download the LIVINGSTON-ROOT-MIB file to resolve the PortMaster OID hierarchy in their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LIVINGSTON-ROOT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Lucent (formerly Livingston Enterprises) PortMaster 3 / PortMaster 4 remote access servers
Monitoring Examples
An operator loading PortMaster management MIBs into a MIB browser imports LIVINGSTON-ROOT-MIB first so that OIDs under lucentPM3/lucentPM4 resolve correctly; a 'no such object' error at the lucentPMMib branch when browsing a PortMaster device would indicate this root MIB was not loaded ahead of the dependent modules.
What Can Be Monitored
- PortMaster product/root OID hierarchy resolution
- lucentPM3 and lucentPM4 identifier branches
- prerequisite for loading dependent PortMaster global-config MIB objects
Imported Objects
