What Is JUNIPER-MOBILE-GATEWAY-SGW-SM-MIB?

JUNIPER-MOBILE-GATEWAY-SGW-SM-MIB is a Juniper Networks MIB for the Mobile Gateway platform's Serving Gateway (SGW) Session Manager, part of Juniper's LTE/EPC mobile packet core product line. It exposes per-session-manager statistics covering GTP tunnel establishment attempts and successes, peer- and gateway-initiated deactivations, and GTP-C/GTP-U packet and byte counters split by interface (Gn/S5/S8) and direction. This is squarely a performance/traffic-counter MIB used to monitor the software-level health of the mobile core's session management function — tracking session establishment success rates, deactivation causes, and throughput — rather than physical hardware sensors like temperature or fans. As an LTE/EPC-specific module it builds on 3GPP GTP protocol concepts and is deployed alongside other JUNIPER-MOBILE-GATEWAY-* MIBs (e.g. system, MME, PGW modules) that together cover the full mobile gateway chassis. An operator would poll jnxMbgSgwSMStatsTable/jnxMbgSgwSMStatsEntry for jnxMbgSgwSessnEstAttmpts versus jnxMbgSgwSuccSessnEst to compute the session establishment success rate for the SGW's session manager. A rising ratio of jnxMbgSgwPeerInitDeactv or jnxMbgSgwGwInitDeactv relative to jnxMbgSgwPeerInitSuccDeactv/jnxMbgSgwGwInitSuccDeactv would flag abnormal session teardown behavior worth investigating. Throughput can be tracked via jnxMbgSgwGtpStatsGnS5S8InpPkt/InpByt and OutPkt/OutByt, and jnxMbgSgwSMNotifications would alert on threshold conditions detected by the session manager.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using jnxMbgSgwSessnEstAttmpts OID:

Select a Juniper Networks mobile gateway platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type jnxMbgSgwSessnEstAttmpts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the total Session establishment attempts. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
