What Is IPX?

The IPX MIB is a generic, vendor-neutral module for managing Novell's IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) protocol on network devices, covering basic system-level identity and traffic statistics for the IPX stack. It exposes a basic-system table describing each IPX instance's network number, node address, and name, alongside receive-side counters for packets received, header errors, unknown-socket drops, discards, and bad checksums. In a monitoring context it is used to track the health and traffic load of the IPX protocol stack on a device, with error/discard/checksum counters serving as indicators of link or protocol-level problems rather than hardware faults. It is a standalone protocol MIB not formally layered on other standard MIBs beyond general SNMP/SMI conventions, originating from Novell's own MIB definitions. It is typically deployed on legacy routers, servers, and network devices that still run Novell NetWare/IPX networking, most common in older enterprise LANs, where the IPX MIB remains a useful reference for troubleshooting stack-level traffic issues.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ipxBasicSysTable/ipxBasicSysEntry (indexed by ipxBasicSysInstance) to confirm ipxBasicSysExistState is active and to read ipxBasicSysNetNumber and ipxBasicSysNode identifying the IPX segment and device. Rising ipxBasicSysInHdrErrors, ipxBasicSysInBadChecksums, or ipxBasicSysInDiscards relative to ipxBasicSysInReceives would indicate a noisy link or misconfigured IPX segment. ipxBasicSysInUnknownSockets climbing could point to misdirected or malformed IPX traffic reaching the device.
